The Project

Seismic vulnerability verification, final and executive design, safety coordination during the design phase and work direction, for seismic retrofitting of the “Leonardo da Vinci” High School located in Florence, via Dei Marignolli n.1.

Introduction

The project concerns the seismic upgrading of the “Leonardo da Vinci” High School in Florence, which consists of three building bodies. The state intervention is divided into 2 lots. At the request of the Contracting Authority, the intervention was designed to be carried out without interrupting educational activities. This challenge led to innovative design choices aimed at minimizing the impact of the work on daily school life. To achieve this goal, we opted for the earthquake retrofit design.

Technical details

  • Installation of sliding pendulum seismic isolation devices to decouple structures from ground motion.
  • Foundation consolidation with beam reinforcement and stiffening of the deck above the insulation system.
  • Replacement and lightening of exterior curtain walls and partitions to improve safety and reduce structural load.
  • Insertion of seismic joints to allow relative movements between the basement and upper floors.
  • Adaptation of facilities by inserting joints to ensure continuity of operation.
  • Choosing solutions that minimize the impact on educational activities, avoiding extensive demolition.

Results

The intervention will significantly improve the seismic safety of the building, ensuring full post-event operability and preserving the functionality of school facilities and equipment.
