Marconi

The Project
Seismic vulnerability assessment, Final and Executive Design and Operational Supervision of structural works for the restoration and seismic improvement of the professional institute “G. Marconi – Former Colombo College” in Viareggio, as well as construction supervision. (Lot 1 and 2)
Introduction
The building at 25 Via Trieste in Viareggio, designed by Arch. Alfredo Belluomini in 1933, is an asset of cultural interest and has structural deficiencies, particularly with respect to seismic actions. The intervention aims at seismic improvement and rehabilitation of the building, originally used as a college, with a conservative and structural approach.
Technical details
- Safety assessment using ζE and ζv parameters to evaluate seismic and gravity load capacity.
- Strengthening of floor slabs with lightweight concrete overlays to increase stiffness.
- Demolition of post-war rooftop additions and construction of new foundations.
- Installation of new shear walls and reinforcement of masonry walls using FRCM (Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix) plaster systems.
- Removal of the metal over-roof to restore the original architectural appearance.
- Lightening of floor structures and restoration of decorative elements in reinforced concrete.

Results
The intervention will ensure enhanced seismic safety and improved structural efficiency, while preserving the building’s original architectural features and optimizing its long-term durability.
